Hi Everyone,

I was driving my CX-60 3.3l Diesel when i got this warning as shown below:

Excessive Engine Temperature Engine Output Restricted Temporarily.

The sequence of events were as follows:
  • been driving for over 2 hours and everything was fine.
  • I stopped for a toilet break and then when i continued the trip, within maybe 5 mins i got the above error.
  • I slowed down and it went away as the car seemed to cool, then it came back when i accelerated up a hill.
The Coolant gauge was responding very fast, like if i reduced speed then the temp dropped and when i pushed the car it was increasing quite quickly. Aircon on then off didn't make any difference.
I then got an additional warning which said something like high coolant temperature so i stopped the car and turned it off.
I turned the car on and it was still showing it was hot. The fan radiator operated and i saw the the temp come down pretty fast while idling.
Got back in the car and the car drove perfectly for another 250km - no issues at all.
I tried to push the car and accelerate aggressively up a hill etc - the car was perfect, the coolant gauge didn't even flinch.

I not a 100% sure but it seemed like it was revving higher than it should be while it was overheating. I thought maybe i had bumped the gear flap and put it in manual but it was in D.
Car is 3 months old- less than 5000Kms.
I was not towing anything.
Outside temp was 23 degrees C.

If you have any ideas

?
Could this be a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) cycle? But i never thought that could trigger a warning...
Best Regards
Philip

I had а similar issue - drove quite fast for 40 minutes on the highway and it was after I took the exit and decreased the speed when the engine temperature increased. Some of engine coolant was thrown through the cap of the coolant tank.
Engine had to be replaced under warranty.
I never understood what actually happened, but for me it looks like a failed engine head gasket.
Replacement took something like a month and I was given a CX-5 as a replacement car during that period.
Please keep us updated on how the issue develops in your case.

Hi, had exactly the same thing with my 2024 3500km cx-60 diesel a few days ago. The car was towed to the dealer and they said that diagnostics showed that these shutters did not open and there was a possibility of engine overheating. They did not repair or change anything and told me that if this happens again, call Mazda Europe and they will tow the car again. Coolant was overfilling and coolant tank was absolutely full all these two hours I waited for the tow truck and coolant level did not go down. Question - how did you get the dealer to change your engine? Seems like Mazda dealer in Estonia has no clue about this problem and lets me drive off and hope this problem does not happen again.

Interesting thread.

Our CX-60 had just been for a service and was about 1.25 hours into a 3.5 hour journey when coolant warning message came up. I pulled off into a motorway service area and popped the hood. Coolant bottle overflowing and coolant dripping off bonnet.

Decision was made to abandon trip and try to limp home. Starting off, all seemed OK but about 15 minutes in, same issue. Heater also packed up. Coolant gauge up and down like a yoyo. Anything over 50 MPH or going uphill, temperature would rise alarmingly. Ease off and it'd fall back into the normal range.

I had thought that coolant may have been drained during service and air introduced into the system. Dealer swears not.

I'll get Mazda to take a look at the car on Monday but if not air in system, looks akin to a blown head gasket. Engine's done something in the region of 25,000 miles.

Not good!?

Hi. Got my CX-60 towed to the dealer for the second time. After a week they said that they did the coolant co2 test and it was positive. Yesterday they said that there is one new engine somewhere in Europe and it takes two weeks for it to arrive here in Estonia and then at least two to three weeks for it to be replaced. They gave me a PHEV cx-60 for the period although they said that it is not required for them to give me a replacement car at all.

Apparently issue with car overheating is early indication of head gasket failure. This will be repaired under warranty but parts aren't available. They're on back order -- although for most items, this seems to be end of next week. However cylinder head bolts, 7th April.

No car for me for a while.

Well, until I ask the dealer for a temporary replacement.

TBH, just happy that the issue is being acknowledged and fixed.

Hi I drive a Mazda 3.3L diesel, 2023 model, currently have 17,000km. I just read all the posts. On two occasions, like most, I had the same problem with overheating at higher speeds and uphill. On the first occasion, they changed the intercooler, but the problem was not solved. After three weeks, on the first trip out of town, it overheated again, coolant was overfilling and leaking out of the tank. I am currently waiting for the final outcome from an authorized Mazda repairer. Do you know if they are required to provide us with a replacement vehicle while the repair is in progress?

Zapnutí a vypnutí klimatizace nic neměnilo.

S pozdravem
Filip

Found this forum when I tried to understand my CX-60 Diesel 3.3 'overheating' problem. It's happened about 5-6 times now, "Excessive engine temperature. Engine output restricted temporarily". First time it happened I lifted the bonnet and some coolant had blown out of the expansion tank cap. But I couldn't think why it had suddenly overheated, two hours into a journey. I had been driving normally as I had driven in the previous 29,000 miles. And it didn't repeat for a few more weeks. Then it did it again, climbing a longish hill near home after a one hour journey. Yet again, the temperature returned to normal after about 5 minutes with engine off. Subsequently it has done it again with the same pattern: after at least an hour on the road, normally on a slight uphill section. I made it to our nearest Mazda dealer (nearly four hours away) with just one overheat, and then as long as I kept my eye on the temperature gauge and kept speed to around 60-70mph I could carry on without issue. Having read about head gasket problems I watched for white smoke: none. I checked the oil dipstick, no whiteish residue, I checked the coolant level, once cool, morning and night, no loss. Yet the Mazda dealer did the 'sniffer' test and seems to be of the opinion the problem is the head gasket. Furthermore his demeanor seems to suggest it might not be covered by warranty, and might not even include a loan car if they take it in to repair. I apparently have to continue to drive as I have been doing, and await a decision from Mazda to decide whether to repair or replace under warranty or charge me for repairs and loan/hire car. Frankly, having had 5 faultless Hondas before, I'm rather shocked that a manufacturer of a premium vehicle should leave me feeling anything other than full satisfaction. That I have bought a car that has been less than 100% reliable is bad enough in my book.

I'm not convinced it's the head gasket causing the high temperature. There's no coolant loss, no loss of power, no white smoke, no scum in the oil and I'm baffled by the fact that the radiator blinds don't open when the car has slowed because the temperature is so high that power output is limited. At what engine temperature should the blinds be open, and what could prevent them opening to cool the engine?
