Octopus Energy - Pod Point - Mazda CX60 - Home Assistant

I thought I'd do an overview of how to get the best out of the above setup.

You will need to be familiar with setting up static IPs on your router, using command line, not afraid of using a text editor to modify configuration and code and be prepared for some frustration getting it working. If this isn't you then read no further.

I have an automated home with a variety of devices - switches, light bulbs, smart radiator valves, thermostats and a groovy little thing that can push a switch down. Mainly Tuya and Sonoff/eWeLink devices. I am on the Octopus Agile tariff. This has different electricity prices for each half hour during the day and is published a day in advance at around 4pm. You need a newer smart meter to be able to use the Agile tariff. Here's a good overview : Energy Stats - If you do decide to switch to Octopus from your current supplier, please use this link for £50 off your bill and £50 off my bill. You switch to Octopus standard pricing first (for a few days) and then once completed request a move to Agile.

I used to use a complicated set of different tools to manage the house - smartthings, SharpTools, IFTTT, Alexa routines and so on. To do what I really wanted I would have involved a monthly subscription fee to one or more of companies involved. Instead I decide to go down the route of Home Assistant

Home Assistant runs typically on a server that you build and place into your household network. Probably the easiest way to get started is to use a Raspberry Pi dedicated install. Needless to say, I didn't use that route, I use a Docker installation running on a TerraMaster NAS but that route required a good deal more delving into linux and files.

Home Assistant handles all of the equipment that I use:
Mazda Integration
Pod Point Integration
Octopus Energy
eWeLink
Tuya

Home Assistant comes with a powerful set of automations (routines) that can be triggered by events, switch devices on or off etc.

Specifically:

I use the Octopus integration to calculate (it's built in to the integration to do this) the cheapest 5 30 minute slots overnight (10pm-6am) to charge the car - This can be used to trigger the Pod Point to enable/disable charging. I also use an afternoon and morning slots calculation to do a similar thing if I'm going to use the car more than once during the day. Last night it cost me about £1.40 to charge the car form 30% to 100% using the cheaper slots.

You can also check that the Mazda is at "home" to make sure you don't start a charging session when you aren't at home - You can also check that the Mazda is plugged in, but you may need to get Home Assistant to do a Refresh of the car, wait a couple of minutes and then do a check to see if the car is plugged in. The Mazda integration works exactly like the Mazda App which I'm sure you will already know needs to be refreshed to get the latest picture.

I also have routines that switch off the Pod-Point charging if the car is unplugged from the cable.

There's loads extra that can be done beyond the work with car - I use Life360 app and Home Assistant integration to turn off the lights/TV etc. if no one is home, turn off the heating if no one has been in the house for 6 hours (vacation mode), switch on welcome lights in an evening. Set radiator valve thermostats according to different times of the day. Just limited by your imagination. Check the weather and only turn on the heating when it's cold (I use a 4ch Sonoff switch wired in parallel with my central heating controllers, but if you got something like hive it will integrate with Home Assistant.)

If you want to integrate a 'thing' just google 'homeassistant the_thing_you_want_to_integrate' I've found loads of stuff I wasn't expecting, not least of which is the Mazda integration.

Hope this is of use to someone.

Might be a good idea to add this thread from Home Assistant community forum for the Mazda integration:

here

I recently added my flow for NodeRed for charging the car and controlling preheat which might be of use to people (to be clear, I am on Go tariff so get cheap charging between 12:30am and 4:30am for 7.5p kWh which means the car charges full battery for £1.35)

I thought about using that tariff to be honest, but it's something like (currently) 12p/kWh from 12:30-4:30am and 40p/kWh the rest of the time. As I often need to charge more than once per day it would have cost me more, as well as the fact I have an electric oven and hob.

I've reduced my predicted monthly electricity costs from ~£200 per month to ~£150 with the work I've done and I only had it up and running since 18th so finger's crossed next month I'll get it down a bit more as well.
The price comes to an end in August for me. At that point I am looking to go over to IO so I get it a bit cheaper (10p per unit) and more hours. Down side is IO doesn’t support PodPoint with the car (although PodPoint have told me it should be a supported charger by the end of the year).
Considering PodPoint is the Mazda approved charger (at least in the UK) I’m still a bit miffed that when I plug the car in it doesn’t lock the charger in to the car. I have raised it with my dealer last October but nothing yet. It is because of using a schedule with PodPoint (either in the app or via Home Assistant) and charge not being delivered to the car immediately. I have found a work around though; if I set the car to a specific charge window, and have the PodPoint/HA scheduling the charges, if I then enable Pod Point to deliver charge the car then locks on to the charger. Because the time of connecting the charger to the car is outside the charge window set on the car it doesn’t actually start charging the car at peak rate

I'd not noticed that - I will have to check it now.

Just checked mine. Pod point schedule for 01:30 tonight. With car locked the cable is locked in the car. I can actually hear the lock engage. Obviously if I unlock the car it frees the cable ready to release and drive away!

Yes I noticed that PodPoint wasn’t supported. I looked at the Ohme charger but they wanted another £600 above the cost of the discounted PodPoint so it wasn’t really an option. But hopefully my clicking on the IO check screens will ad another upvote for PodPoint to be included.

Thanks @SteveMilner for the HA tips.. just need to dust off my spare Pi to get it running. Was looking for another automation project!

That is interesting. Do you have any schedule set on the car as well as PodPoint schedule? I wonder why my one isn’t locking on (I have made sure the settings in the c are is set to lock onto the cable as soon as it is connected)

No I don't have a car schedule as it is unnecessary for me!
When I plug in at the car end, the light goes white. Lock the car (or walk away) and the car locks the cable and I recall the light flashes white. I did one time not push the plug in properly and it failed to charge at all. Didn't get any warning that I was aware of>

I must be doing something wrong then. I unlock the car, open the flap, pull out the plug, put the charge cable into the socket, lock the car but can pull the charge cable out. Only time it actually locks in to the car is when charge starts (I usually plug in around 9:30pm and scheduled charging doesn’t start until 12:45am). I haven’t tried disabling the Home Assistant integrations for a while and solely relying on PodPoint schedule. Will give that a go tomorrow.
Out of curiosity, what software version does your PodPoint say it has installed? I have A30P-3.1.27-00002 installed.
I know the car is up to date for OTA update - when did you get your car? I got my end of September with a build date of May as I recall.
Finally, what setting do you have on the car regarding locking the charge cable?

thanks in advance
My car was September with all the early adopter issues, was fully updated in January. Pod point went in in August and has not been touched or updated by me. Where do I find the Software version, cant see it on my phone app.
I didn't know there was a cable lock setting. So I guess I'm on factory setting.

@UKPhil in the app, go to Account - Solo Smart Charger and the firmware version is shown there.
the cable lock setting is in the EV menu on the car

Not near car right now; but PodPoint firmware is A30P-5.0.2-00015 which it says is latest version.

Thank you for that. My one says latest version as well but clearly there is a difference! Just after I got the car I did contact PodPoint about the issue of not locking on and they sent a custom firmware to my Pod which didn’t work. They then came and replaced the entire Pod Point. I wonder if they still have the custom firmware associated with my account.

Just to be clear, I have Solo 3 tethered. Is that what you have as well?
Mine is Solo 3 untethered.
The car setting you asked about is "Lock when connected"
PS I would not expect the Podpoint to signal the car to lock the connector if thats what you are suggesting from the question about software/firmware version.

Thank you so much for the info. I will reach out to PodPoint and ask them to remotely update my firmware. The PodPoint detects it is connected to the car (I can see the status in Home Assistant ‘Plugged in waiting for schedule’) but not sending the right signal to the car for the car to understand it is connected and the car to then lock the cable in

Does the Mazda Connect app on your phone show as connected. I think you are saying that you get charge OK just not locking the cable in the car socket.

Correct. Mazda app says connected but not charging. When time reaches the Pod Point schedule, the car then locks on to the cable but outside of that time when the cable is connected to the car the car doesn’t lock on to the cable.
I sent PodPoint an email yesterday regarding the firmware version being old on my pod. Seems like they pushed an update to the Pod as the car didn’t charge last night and when I check firmware version the new firmware is now installed on the pod. Also the schedule was reset to default of being enabled but no times actually set. This is why the car didn’t charge.

I just had a play around by connecting the cable to the car. As you can see, the car sees the cable but still hasn’t locked the cable to the car:

This is the setting I have enabled on the car:

That's same as mine. I have walk away lock on the car. But it also locks by fob or by touching handle. I would cycle the mazda instructions : Off , when charging, when connected. If that fails a quick trip to your dealer.
