Autogefühl has a new driving review out with the CX-60 e-Skyactiv. Pretty positive review overall. He says the luxury aspects are the selling point of the CX-60 compared to the driving experience. He says it's not as fun to drive as a CX-5.

It looks like there are a lot of mixed feelings about this car after initial reviews and the car being on the market for a couple of months only.

My first impressions after two test drives (and still thinking of buying):

PROS
1. Power! It is impressive how the car accelerates (5.8 sec 0-100km/h) and how it sounds in sport mode (insurance-wise, the cheapest 300+hp you can get here in Austria where after purchase you also get back EUR 1.500 in taxes),
2. Interior quality is absolutely in line with Mercedes, BMW, Audi - it is really impressive,
3. Cargo space size is excellent,
4. Consumption of the test model was around 5-6 liters per 100km which is impressive for a 300+hp car (some owners are reporting 2 liters per 100km),
4. Ride quality felt decent, was sharp but comfortable, even with 20" wheels, and over the bumps,
5. Technology (Safety add-ons and Infotainment system), I also love small details and how i.e. the water comes out of the wipers themselves and not from the hood when you want to clean the front windshield,
6. 6 years warranty (here in Austria),
7. Price: It is 20k EUR cheaper (!!) than similar spec competitors: BMW X3 M ca. 78tk EUR, Lexus NX350h F Sport 76tk EUR, while Mazda CX-60 PHEV Homura fully spec in Austria comes at ca. 53tk EUR via Mazda Leasing.

CONS
1. Space in the back seats is really disappointing (they could've reduced the cargo space and added those couple of centimeters for extra legroom in the back instead,
2. Central console armrest opening is very weird and you basically need to open it twice so that it opens completely (left and right sides open separately) - Lexus offers the same, but also offers to open both armrest splits at the same time with one click,
3. Front central console is unnecessarily too wide, even for the US standards, they could've made the front seats wider instead, which would then add more space and comfort for legs horizontally - sitting in front seems just a bit too narrow to me,
4. EV mode is a bit weird - you are in EV mode, but it seems that you always hear some weird sound from the car (I drive a six year old HEV and always know exactly in which mode I am, just by the sound of it and EV mode is always quite, in Mazda that doesn't seem to be the case but not sure why),
5. Mazda 'intelligent' seating set up with face recognition that helps you to find the perfect seating position - I found it completely useless, especially the setup of the outside mirrors which was completely off and I needed to adjust everything on my own,
6. Mixed online reviews on youtube and a lot of complaints on this forum about a number of production issues that came with this model - the car is not even 6 months old and it's Japanese! Should I be concerned?!

Taking everything into consideration, I am still considering buying this car, with possible delivery around March-April (if I decide to order it this week), until when I believe a lot of these childhood diseases could be sorted.

To add: Considering that I have a lot of experience with batteries in general, and owning two HEV's in the last 10 years, I can only confirm that a drop in EV mileage during the winter period is absolutely normal. Batteries are very sensitive to temperatures and reduced capacity is what you get when the temps go extreme (hot or cold). That is why I also don't believe that purely electric cars are the future. HEV/PHEV yes, absolutely, and if I would live somewhere where Lexus is more affordable I would drive the NX350h AWD F-Sport today :) Toyota/Lexus launched hybrid technology in the '97 with Prius, and they are, as much as it sounds unbelievable, 25 years ahead of Mazda in this technology development!

Any suggestions and comments from those who own CX-60 already would be highly appreciated before buying this car.

Cheers,
G.

I own a CX60 Homura with all options..Ill comment on some of your points if it gives you some extra thoughts to play with

1.Space in the back - Yes, I was surprised when my friend, who is all of 5ft 2" needed the front seat to go forward to fit comfortable. Thats ok the passenger side, but on the drivers side, not a chance as I'm 6ft 4" and need the chair all the way back, so if back seat usage is important to you and you need all the space in the front, it may not be the car for you.

2. I actually like the way it opens, seems classy but it is shallow and only really useful for a pair of sunglassses etc.

3. I love the size of the centre console tbh, BUT I do think the seats need extendable thigh support. This is the area of the car that lets itself down, the seats are just not good enough for a car of this price level or any price level in my book, even an Audi A3 has better seats. There is no extendable head rest either, so I have opted for a £20 head rest cushion from Amazon, even a VW Tiguan has an extendable head rest.. However, if you look at a Range Rover, the seats in that are even worse, so the CX60's are not the worst, but could be better.

3. The whole drivetrain engine/hybrid/ev is weird, there's no getting around that. The gearbox gets muddled in first and second and can cause some random jerking, which feels out of character as the rest of the drive is smooth and luxury - but just to mention, it dosent happen ALL the time, its just random occasions.

5. Intelligent Seating worked perfectly for me, and got it spot on first time. Its great that the wheel will lift up for exit and go back to your desired settings when getting in. My only niggle is sometimes it dosent spot your face and goes into guest mode - the manual override is in the menu system which can be a pain. I noticed today that you can add more photos to your profile, so I may do some side and top of head shots for when I get into the car awkwardly.

6. I haven't had any major issues so far other than a slightly excitable High Beam Assist that I fixed with a reset.

Some things I love..

1. The calmness of the drive - its such a pleasant zen like place to be, I live in London in crazy 24 hour traffic, and it makes even traffic jams relatively stress free.

2. The BOSE system is a beautiful sound (once you have engaged the Surround Sound mode - don't forget to do this!)

3. The interior cabin is just a lovely place to be. I feel calmer after getting in the car and driving than I do before, despite its colossal size, it feels much smaller when driving, its never a chore and more an occasion. That's definitely some well executed Japanese Zen design.

4. The camera system and picture quality is A1. I came from an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce which had a camera straight out of the 80's.

5. For a 2T car, it's so blummin quick when you want it to be, and the engine sounds like a 5 cylinder Audi one when on full chant.

6. Headlights are epic

7. Adaptive Cruise and Lane Assist work perfectly and are not overly invasive

Some things I dont like;

1. The seats need thigh support as mentioned

2. The Hill Hold Assist has to be turned on every time you turn it on, it won't stay on. When you live in a city its needed every day so this is a pain and can be solved so simply with a menu option to keep it on. So why don't they do it?

3. The Hybrid 'Normal' mode is annoying because it will use battery only EV mode till around 1/4 battery left then go into hybrid mode. Why cant it just stay in Hybrid mode all the time and get a better MPG rather than ditching most of its battery in the first 20 miles? or have a mode to do this?

4. The exhaust trims are plastic and fake. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!

5. My dealer sucks.

6. The steering wheel heater is only a small portion of the wheel which is rubbish if you don't drive with your hands in the 3-9 position.

Just some initial thoughts anyway! Hope that helps

Mate, I really appreciate this - thank you so much for your feedback. That is exactly what I needed to hear.
Btw my wife just told our kid that we're getting a new Mazda, so he can have rear seat heating (it's snowing in Austria today and temps are in minus), so I guess it's a done deal no matter what - my wife has made up her mind :-D

1. I'm 6'0 and we tested the space behind me when I'm in a driver's seat - it seems like enough space for our kid who is only 11 years old, but already 5'5! On the passenger side, there is no problem at all.

2. Appreciate the feedback - I guess it's just a matter of getting used to the armrest, and yes, it seems a bit shallow.

3. Such a wide central console reminds me actually of Chevrolet Tahoe V8, which I wanted to buy when I lived in the Middle East, and in that car, I actually really liked that massive central console :) so maybe it's again just a matter of getting used to it - I ended up driving Grand Cherokee V6 (Night Eagle) instead, and I really loved that car.
Agree about the seats, it's a shame that Mazda creates great (exterior) designed cars, but that they do not pay attention to more details when designing the seats - Mazda is a Japanese "BMW" but you can't compare the seats of those two brands at all. On the other hand, while I loved owning my BMW X1 with M Sport pack and great sport seats (with el. adj. side support and extendable length support), those seats are not that comfortable on long journeys and to be honest I got tired of them after three years of ownership. But I would love to see Volvo type of seats in Mazda - both design and comfort-wise. I owned Volvo XC60 R-Design and before that S60 Summum - After driving a lot of auto brands, I am of an opinion that Volvo is making the best seats in the auto industry!

4. Agree that the drivetrain felt weird, but to be honest it did feel as you said, smooth and luxurious overall - that weirdness did not bother me too much. I also appreciated the calmness of the drive and just feeling that zen, as you said.

5. Intelligent seating - Noted, and yes, I agree that it is great that the steering wheel lifts up for exit and then goes back to your desired settings when getting in - Had that function on my Grand Cherokee and absolutely loved it!

...

BOSE: Absolutely love it! I miss my Alpine sound system from the Jeeps as well (both Grand Cherokee and later on the Wrangler).

Camera System is top - agree 100%!

Lane Keep Assist (LKA) - Question: I did read on the forum that someone was complaining about it, so the question is can we shut it down? On my first test drive, the LKA was engaging nicely on the highway, but on the second drive it wasn't, so I assume someone switched it off, right? Even though again, I believe someone on the forum complained about the procedure when doing that, and that it is required to do it every time he was entering the car, which was weird because I did not switch it of for sure.

Power and sound of the engine: Absolutely love it! And yes, when you press pedal to the metal in Sport mode, it sounds like a 5-cylinder engine indeed!

Hill Hold Assist - Noted. And yes, why couldn't they make it to always stay on, with an option to turn it off actually?

Off-Road/ EV/ Normal/ Sport Hybrid modes: Well noted. I was testing the car mainly in EV and Sport modes and just went through Normal mode quickly, but it did not impress me much. The EV mode disappointed in a sense that it was too slow when starting from being still - was expecting immediate launch and instant max release of battery power but the start was so slow instead. Ah yes, remember someone mentioned that 0-100 km/h acceleration is faster in Off-Road mode than Sport!

The exhaust trims: Yes I saw that, but look at it from the bright side, they made them look like you have four pipes coming out, while, at least to my understanding, there are only two real pipes behind them (one on each side). Considering that you had Stelvio before CX-60 I completely understand your disappointment, since Stelvio has, for me, one of the best-looking exhausts.

Dealer: Considering that we have 6 year or 160.000km warranty here in Austria, and the dealer has 4.6 out of 5 stars Google rating (out of 92 votes), I can only hope that my dealership experience is going to be positive.

The steering wheel heater: Noted. Yes, that doesn't sound like a lot of fun, and I remember that when I used the steering wheel heater on my Jeep Grand Cherokee it was all around the steering wheel and it felt great.

Let's see what happens tomorrow after my dealership visit and negotiation with the owner.

I think any kid seeing a Machine Grey CX60 is gonna be excited, let alone the heat seating element :)

MG is actually my favourite colour, but I bought mine as an ex-demonstrator after a fiasco with a Stelvio from the dealer, so I didn't get a choice with Rhodium White, but it stays looking cleaner longer so its all ok!

As I don't have a charging port at home currently, and because the price of electricity is currently higher mile per mile than petrol, I may change to one of the Diesel variants when they start to arrive next year and I've been able to test drive one, if so, it will be Machine Grey for sure!

Mazda currently have an offer here for a £500 PODPORT charge port install (half price) but my dealer won't honour it. He said at the time it was included in the deal, but once the vehicle had been paid for and delivered etc, he then claimed he didn't say it (even though there are recorded telephone calls confirming he did), suffice to say, I will be taking it to Mazda customer service shortly.

Complete agree about the Volvo seats! Probably best there is in the market. I miss the days when you could spec Recaro's, as the most comfiest seats I have ever owned in cars have always been made by Recaro. To think a 1990 MK2 Golf GTI with optional Recaros where comfier than a modern £50k Luxury SUV is crazy when you think about it.

With the Lane Keep Assist, so I may be wrong in this as I haven't done a huge amount of motorway miles so far - but there seems to be two versions of it. You can activate the actual LKA on the steering wheel to give you autonomous driving along with Adaptive Cruise. This is then a much more severe pull if you try to change lanes without indicating when activated. There is a much less invasive safety lane keep assist which is automatic and constant, and will give a slight tug and steering wheel rumble but its not invasive at all, and merely more of a 'nudge' saying 'check what you are doing dude' kinda thing. Once you know it happens, you dont worry about it, but the first few times you do panic for a moment. That's my experience with it anyway.

You wouldn't want to the full EV mode to go full on Tesla for acceleration as that would probably kill the battery in a moment in a 2tonne car! The claimed 39 miles on EV is a complete lie anyway, expect 20-25 (less in sub zero temps) at best and that's driving like an old lady in Memphis sunshine.

There seems to only be one exhaust, under the right side of the car as you look at it. So the dual exit plastic thing is a real let down - but all the manufacturers are doing it now, Audi have so much fake plastic vents and air dams etc they are a bit like a Lego car. The Stelvios are real though :)

We get screwed in the UK with pretty much everything, so unsurprising to hear you get such a better warranty! Its three years here, like most brands other than the Koreans, but those Korean warranties can prove to be worthless when needed.

What Mazda did get right, which is important to me is the seating position is always perfect to use the armrests either side. Audi nail this too, but VW don't (their Tiguan is just a mess on this front, all out of balance), and the Afla was 'ok' but not perfect.

I never actually intended to buy a CX60. At the time, I had never even seen a CX60. I bought a Stelvio Veloce diesel from the dealer, that had multiple faults every time it was delivered (three attempted deliveries, three faults, month at the dealer getting fixed), and the CX60 became my courtesy car, which I ended up keeping after rejecting the Stelvio. It really is such a lovely car and I prefer the interior to an Audi Q5, and wireless Carplay is just brilliant, no more wires and plugging phones. This was all done remotely, so seeing the CX60 for the first time when it pulled up on my driveway was a very excitable moment! Getting back in the stelvio after that felt like I'd gone backwards in time.

@Southeastern this could be interesting for you... 4 real exhaust pipes for your CX-60

Well...I think two of them will still be fake though :) Certainly sounds better tho!

Eibach have released a lowering kit and wheel spacers now as well. Not a drastic drop, just enough to look meaningful without slamming it to the deck. I have a feeling the Eibach springs will probably be better than the OEM ones based on previous experience with them..
