Koni Special Active Adaptive Dampers for the CX60

1806 Views 41 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Southeastern
For those of you wishing to improve the ride of the CX60, the Koni dampers are apparently ready and a first batch has been sent to distributors.

It seems also that they are being entwined into the Mazda network itself, so we may even see them as an option in the future like Autoexe bodykits and exhausts are in Japan

I am still waiting for clarification on if there are alternative dampers for the Diesel or PHEV, but right now I've been given

8245 1438L MAZDA CX-60 2022 -> - FRONT LEFT

8245 1438R MAZDA CX-60 2022 -> - FRONT RIGHT

8245 1439 MAZDA CX-60 2022 -> - REAR

If you are interested we suggest:

• Contact your local KONI Distributor: KONI | Google Locator

• Contact your local Mazda Dealer. Within the MAZDA Organization Moerman Jansen in the BeNeLux is coordinating the supplies of these shock absorbers.

My experience with Special Actives means they will produce a plush ride at cruising speeds and handle those speed bumps and potholes with grace and comfort, but when you want to get lively, the second frequency gate opens up and the ride locks up to a nicely firm ride with little body roll. I used them on my previous Audi S3 and it was the ride that Audi should have given the car from the factory.

Alfa Romeo use these shocks on some of their cars as do Mercedes on some models, albeit oem branded.

Hopefully will see some prices at some point and will update.

Fingerscrossed! Hope to see it in UK soon.
Well, they are proving popular already, first production batch sold in a matter of days.

No confirmation about PHEV / Diesel despite being asked. I will try again.

However it seems like this will be a full Mazda warranty part, so will not affect your Mazda warranty. I expected this may happen due to Mazda being aware of how bad the OEM setup is, so good news for those wanting to take the plunge.

Ok confirmation that the dampers are both PHEV and Diesel fitment.

This makes me a lot more sure about the PHEV damper change revision is to the Diesel dampers.

Warranty WILL NOT be affected by installing the Koni's.

Unfortunately these are being sold locally through that dealer for the time being, so not being official imported through the Koni network in the UK, will mean we in the UK will be hit with 25% VAT and Duty being added on. So looks like I'll be waiting a lot longer to get a set on my car.

These look great!

If only Mazda fitted them as standard.

Yes, I found that out too today.

Another production run is to due to hit in June though, so only a short wait if you're keen.

That sucks. Sounds like a guy/dealer I don't want to deal with if that's what he is doing.

Its annoying, as I've been in touch with Koni from the very start getting them to produce the shocks for the CX60, sending them lots of info and advising what needs to be done and the tuning on the pressure needed etc, promoting them in forums and social media CX60 groups..they told me they would be released in May and then they just stopped replying to me and they wouldnt allocate me a set so I could introduce them to UK based CX60 owners. Bit of a daft move on their behalf as I have lots of people wanting to try my car after they are fitted and my dealer is interested in them too from all the complaints they have had about the CX60 ride quality.

Next I know, this dealer has bought all the stocks and has 'exclusivity'. He has never once been on a forum or an owners club group.

Today, I emailed Koni from a different email account, and they told me more would be available in June, and now from what you are saying it sounds like that dealer has bought all the stock again.

Imagine if you get a set and then one of them gets damaged? getting a replacement will also be a mission.

Sounds like Koni are full of shit tbh. Paying this dealers 'mark up' and then UK customs and duty, its not going to be financially viable for many here.

ordered today what I found. Two front shock absorbers (standing + right) and one rear shock absorber with delivery in July 2023. If you have news and options so that I can order another rear shock absorber, please let me know.
How this one dealer is sure that will sell all 50 sets? I'm not sure that in Poland will be many customers...

He’s already sold them. This is the third batch they are taking orders for by thr sounds of things.

He's based in the Netherlands I think, but I hope they haven't been tuned for NL roads? All flat ground!

I think you know more than me tbh dude!
So this dealer found 50 customers in a few days? Without adverts, testing by other customers, positive opinions etc? I cannot believe it is possible.

I imagine he has been 'selling' the idea to his customers for a while, with the ride not being great on the CX60, people will always consult options. They say to him 'the ride is terrible' and he says 'well I have this new suspension coming in from Koni'. The CX60 has been out for over a year now, so thats a lot of cars that will have been sold.

What I think he has done, has realised the market for them and got a deal with Koni to buy up all their production runs, so he can then sell them at a markup to any CX60 owner.

If Koni are saying he is the current 'sole' distributor when people inquire, all the business goes straight to him, so can easily sell out.
If Mazda dealer admits that "ride is terrible" customers should expect Koni suspension for free... Polish dealers maintain that suspension is comfortable.

I didn't say the dealer would admit that.

But yes he could be self funding them to stop customers returning their cars. Who knows, the the fact of the matter is, he has them all and he has done it to ensure he makes the profit from those wanting the suspension, unlike the usual distributer model where the businesses who are Koni stockists all have a fair means to sell.

Still at least I have in writing from him on a Mazda email address that it won’t affect warranty..so if Mazda ever did try to deny a potential claim that can be used as evidence to counter it.
My CX-60 PHEV suspension and ride is comfortable (having had the factory fitted improved dampers), provided that I don’t follow the Mazda (label) 36PSI tyre pressure guidance for a light load. Follow the Mazda guidance for a higher load (39 psi front and 45 psi rear) and it’s vastly improved, indeed very good!

Even SouthEastern agrees (in another thread) that the Mazda recommended 36 PSI produces a dire result and he has commented that he “favours 38 PSI all round“ for his lighter diesel, but admits that he never experimented with tyre pressures for his earlier PHEV. My experience suggest the even higher (five person loaded) PSI is better for the much heavier PHEV, and I wonder if this simple tip might generally improve perceptions? My guess is that a majority of PHEV owners still persevere with the poor ride at 36 PSI as that is what the Mazda door frame affixed label recommends, but put in some extra Tyre pressure in and enjoy the difference.

As regards fitting Koni, fair enough if one has £1200 to spare and if you believe it justified. It is not a modification I will pursue, nor I suspect will Mazda, if it is now overcoming justified poor perceptions of early production cars as ever more owners are satisfied with their factory (or dealer) fitted replacements.
