Considering a CX-70 PHEV (Questions)

I'm currently on the hunt for a new car for my wife, and I've had my eyes on the CX-70 PHEV for a little bit. Is there anything of concern with the car, typical issues, etc? What's the overall opinion on the car. I love how it looks and would like to know more details from people that own one.

Also, has the used market for this car gone down? My local Mazda dealer has a few certified used premium plus with 5K miles for $47k, which seemed low. Is this right up that valley or is it suspiciously low? I looked at the car fax for one of them and it seems it has gone to the dealership twice for computer related services. Is this of concern?

The CX-70 PHEV has had two recalls for software updates. We have 10k miles on our 2025 since January. We love it, drives well, cabin is very quiet, and averages 50 mpg since we put it in service. Only issues are (1) a clunking noise in rear breaks after starting from a complete stop. (2) rear door seals leak dust. Both issues are reported and Madza is working on fixes.

47k seems right for depreciation. I would have it thoroughly checked out before purchase and have the oil tested and changed before purchase.

Here are some things you might not hear about:
1.) Cabin is not that quiet. Road noise and engine gets quite loud when its charging the battery. It's quieter in normal mode, but even then, not as quiet as 2 different Audis i own.

2.) Sunroof is not really a sunroof. Only opens 1/2 way and when it is open and driving, very noisy. Basically ineffective.

2. Even if you get the Premium Plus trim, the daytime driving lights and rear hatch lights aren't functional like the inline6 cx90. Rear hatch section lights are basically placeholders (which I've had to replace myself with lighted version spare part for cx90 - plug&play 4hr job) and daytime running front are placeholders. Daytime running is headlight and not as sexy as cx90 inline6. Look at cx70PPP & cx90inline6 & you'll see the difference.

3.) As others mention, dust leaks into door panels although not necessarily into the cabin.

4.) Cruise "acceleration" from automatic slowdown could give you whip-lash, not to mention burns extra gas by applying maximum acceleration to resume cruise speed.

5.) Although appreciate the drive modes like 4wd etc, the car feels very heavy and the engine "feels" barely adequate to power it.

6.) The battery seems to primarily help improve mpg when driving in normal mode, although I barely see more than average 27mpg. It burns through any charge as priority before changing to a more balanced speed based auto switching between gas and battery. If you run small distances in maybe a setting like beach village, you can probably realize good benefit from EV mode. But any kind of highway drive will burn through the 26 mile battery range in a hurry.

These are my personal observations after owning 2025 PHEV Premium Plus for a year.

I downsized from a fully loaded 2022 Ram 1500 limited as I don’t drive as much anymore do to lingering physical issues after an MVA.

I miss the truck. as for the reason of the above statement, it should give you some insights into why I feel the way I do about the following:

1) Cabin noise, it’s horrendous. Mazda put sound dampening glass up from, but did nothing of the sorts to the rear windows. I can’t talk on Bluetooth without someone commenting too. Never had that issue with the Ram.

2) despite the CX-70 being an suv, I feel there isn’t space that translates for the driver (I’m 6’4” 240 lbs). Test drives were okay, but living with it, it brings these gaps to light.

3) the panoramic sunroof makes no sense, at least to me. I loved having it open on the Ram. It made sense, the sunroof spanned in front of the drivers head, so you got the sense of openness and freedom. For a company that takes pride in the drivers experience, I don’t know what they were thinking about having it so far back. The front of where the glass starts is literally behind my forehead. You’ll never notice it… Also, the way it opens is ridiculous and you’ll be forced to close it at 45-50km/h due to the sheer noise from the wind resistance.

4) The drive is fun and phenomenal. it’s its a big vehicle but is extremely nimble. You will feel every bump, you’ll feel the curves of the road and it accelerates amazingly well in sport. I drive in two modes. EV and sport, shifting between the two depending on how I feel. Sport is responsive, holds gears and it’s fun, but battery will drain like no tomorrow. I use ev in town and when I’m stuck in rush hour.

I did install a level 2 charger, knowing I’ll stick with electrification even if I go back to Ram - totally worth it.

I leased it, knowing it was a transitional ride. My Ram was paid off so I came ahead, but didn’t want to commit to buying a “small” vehicle after driving a full-size pickup for 20 years. it’s fun, can be a smart purchase of you’re okay with the flaws. It’s not perfect, and the praise it’s getting it’s warranted for the drive properties. I would say it’s an okay vehicle, but not as good as the reviews make it out to be outside of the drive properties.
